In this post, I'll walk you through the exact steps needed to get your Shopify store up and running. From signing up to launching your site for the world to see. Let’s get started!

What is Shopify?

Shopify is one of the most popular e-commerce platforms that allows you to create an online store with ease. It’s an all-in-one solution, meaning you don’t need to worry about hosting, security, or complicated design issues. Shopify has everything built in, making it a great option for beginners and experienced sellers alike. It offers a wide range of tools to manage your products, accept payments, track orders, and much more.

What makes Shopify stand out is how user-friendly it is. You don’t need coding skills to get started, and there’s a huge library of resources, themes, and apps to help you build your store. Step 1: Sign Up for Shopify

The very first thing you need to do is sign up for a Shopify account. Don’t worry, it’s free for the first 3 days, and you can get started with just your email address. Here’s how you can get started:

  1. Go to Shopify's homepage (Shopify.com) and click on “Start Free Trial.”

  2. Enter your email address, choose a password, and pick a store name (this can be changed later).

  3. Answer a few simple questions about your business (e.g., what you’re selling, whether you have any products yet, etc.).

  4. Confirm your email and you’ll be inside your store’s dashboard, ready to start building!

From here, you can start exploring Shopify's features. You have 3 days to play around before committing, so take your time!

Step 2: Add Your First Product

Once you're logged into your Shopify store, it’s time to add your first product. If you’re just starting, you may only have a handful of products to list, and that’s perfectly fine.

Here’s how to add a product:

  1. From your Shopify dashboard, go to Products and click Add product.

  2. Enter product details like the title, description, price, and SKU (if you have one).

  3. Upload high-quality images of your product. A picture is worth a thousand words, so make sure they’re clear and professional.

  4. Set your inventory, shipping information, and any variants (like size or color).

  5. When everything looks good, hit Save!

That's it! You now have your first product listed on your store. You can keep adding more products later as your inventory grows.

Step 3: Customize Your Store

Next up is customizing your store’s look and feel. Shopify makes this easy with a wide variety of themes that you can choose from—many of which are free. Whether you want a minimalist look, a bold design, or something more specialized, there’s a theme that suits your brand.

To customize your store:

  1. Go to your Shopify dashboard and click on Online Store > Themes.

Step 4: Set Up Shipping & Delivery

Note: If you're selling in-person as well, Shopify has a Point of Sale (POS) system that allows you to sell products in physical locations and sync everything with your online store.

Step 5: Set Up Your Domain

Shopify gives you a free subdomain (e.g., yourstorename.myshopify.com) when you sign up, but to create a more professional brand presence, you’ll likely want to add a custom domain (like www.yourstorename.com).

Here’s how to add your custom domain:

  1. From your Shopify dashboard, go to Online Store > Domains.

  2. If you don’t have a domain yet, you can either buy one directly through Shopify or connect one you’ve already purchased.

  3. Follow the prompts to set up your domain, and Shopify will handle the rest.

A custom domain will help you look more credible and make it easier for customers to find your store online.

If you already have a domain registered with a 3rd party provider like Hostinger, you can also connect it to your Shopify store.

Step 6: Set Up Payment Providers

Now that your store is looking good, it’s time to set up your payment gateway so you can start accepting payments.

Shopify offers a range of payment options, including Shopify Payments, PayPal, and third-party providers like Stripe. Make sure the payment providers you choose are available in the countries you plan to sell to.

  2. Make sure the checkout process is smooth, and that you receive the order confirmation email.

  3. Verify that you’ve set up everything correctly (shipping, taxes, etc.).

Once you’re happy with everything, you’re almost ready to go live!

Step 8: Launch Your Store

Now for the exciting part: launching your store!

Before you do, you’ll need to choose a pricing plan. Shopify offers four main plans:

  • Basic Plan ($29/month): Ideal for new businesses, includes all the essentials like website hosting, SSL certificate, and unlimited products.

  • Shopify Plan ($79/month): Includes everything in the Basic plan plus more advanced reporting and better shipping discounts.

  • Advanced Plan ($299/month): Includes everything in the Shopify plan, plus advanced reporting, third-party calculated shipping rates, and more.

  • Shopify Plus (starting at $2,300/month): A more enterprise-level solution for larger businesses with higher volume.

Remember, all of these plans are just $1 per month for the first three months, so take advantage of that!

Once you’ve selected your plan, remove the password protecting your store. Go to Online Store > Preferences, scroll down to Password Protection, and turn it off.

Congratulations! Your store is officially live.
